Chief Joe - Kyari Gadzama (SAN)

Today, he has become a Senior Advocate of many firsts, beginning with his birth as the first boy (but fourth child) among five siblings born in Mubi, Adamawa State on November 28, 1961, to the family of the late Inspector Kyari Lassa and Mrs. Saratu Kyari Ali.

His siblings include Mrs. Mary J. Manza, Mrs. Rhoda Nakkudu, Mrs. Rebecca H. Wiam and Paul Kyari Lassa.

Gadzama attended the Methodist (LEA) Primary School, Constitution Road, Kaduna, where he spent his first three years of Primary School (Primary 1-3) from where he transferred to St. Michael’s (LEA) Primary School, Ibrahim Taiwo Road (formerly called Market Road), Kaduna, where he spent his last three years (Primary 4-6) in Primary School.

Upon completing Primary School Education, he sought to enroll in the Nigerian Military School, Zaria with the hope of using that platform to partially realise his boyhood dream of becoming a pilot. But his mother stopped him, fearing that he might be killed in battle at some point.

In 1975, he enrolled at the Teachers’ College, Song, in Adamawa State, from where, he proceeded to the Borno College of Basic Studies (BOCOBS), and then to the University of Maiduguri and eventually got into the Nigeria Law School, Lagos, having emerged as the Best Graduating Student from the Faculty of Law, University of Maiduguri and he is not just the first Senior Advocate produced by that university, but he is the first from the North East, at a time when the North West had no member of the Inner Bar.

Between 1973 and 1979, he represented the defunct North Central State in Badminton at the pioneer National Sports Festival in Surulere, Lagos in 1973, while in primary school. He repeated the feat in 1975, 1977 and 1979 coming second in Badminton at the 1979 Oluyole National Sports Festival in Ibadan, this time, representing the former Gongola State.

In 1986, he was called to the Nigerian Bar as part of the prestigious Centennial ‘Class of 86,’ which had produced more Senior Advocates than any other class of the Law School, with him leading the list as the first to enter the prestigious Inner Bar.

Little wonder, Gadzama was also recently elected “Class Leader” of the Centennial “Class of 86,” having previously served as its Chairman, the centennial class, which produced the immediate past and current Attorneys-General of the Federation, Michael Kaase Aondoakaa (SAN) and Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN) respectively.

Gadzama started his law practice in the Chambers of the Attorney-General of Kano State in 1986 and from there, he became a Solicitor and Advocate with A. Ismail Gadzama & Co. (Solicitors & Advocates) Kano from 1986-1988. Here, he “learnt the ropes”, having adopted “hardwork” as his mantra. But three years later, he decided to take the bull by the horn, in a display of rare courage and independence, as he moved out to establish the firm of Kyari & Co in 1989, which later metamorphosed into J-K Gadzama & Partners LLP, a firm synonymous with professionalism and integrity and he has remained the Founding and Principal Partner to date.

In 1996, he became a notary public while he took the silk in 1998. He has over the years re-defined the term “self-made man”, never shying from greatness but rather embracing it; never afraid of taking a risk and always seeing the positive side of situations. Perhaps, those traits and his desire to serve at the highest level motivated him to running against his friend and name sake, Joe Bodunrin Daudu (SAN) for the Presidency of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) at the last general elections.

Although he lost, many legal practitioners learnt one vital lesson – ‘Don’t Follow Your Dreams, Chase Them.’

But Gadzama has had the opportunity to serve the Bar first as the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja Branch and first / pioneer Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development (SPIDEL).

He is also the current Vice-Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), Abuja Chapter. In addition, he is also a member of a few high profile corporate bodies. He is the Chairman of the Federal Government Special Committee on the Implementation of Rome Statute on the International Criminal Court. He is also the Chairman, Contract Compliance Committee, Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC). He was also a member of the Federal Government Presidential Committee on the Security Challenges in the Northern part of the Country. He is also a member of the Federal Government Presidential Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy.

Chief Gadzama, an intellectual and voracious reader, is also an internationally-acclaimed golfer and has won several tournaments in the sport, locally and internationally. He was the Captain of the IBB International Golf & Country Club from 2004 to 2005, having earlier served as the Club’s Vice Captain and Honorary Secretary.

In addition to the several trophies that he has won as a golfer, he was internationally recognized in the sport when for the first time for an African, he won the International Bar Association (IBA) Holstrom Golf Cup in Prague, the Czech Republic in 2005.

He is happily married to his lovely and amiable wife, Mrs. Janada Joe-Gadzama, a public officer working with the National Health Insurance Scheme (N.H.I.S) and blessed with six children, the eldest of whom (Madu) is a Law Student and the President, African and Caribbean Law Students Association, at the University of Reading, United Kingdom, already following the footsteps of his father.

Chief Gadzama is the consummate family man and mentor, a doting father, firm but gentle.

Seeking to expand his horizon, he was in 2008 called to the English Bar (Lincoln’s Inn) where he practises at Middle Temple Lane Chambers in London. His Law Firm, J-K Gadzama & Partners LLP is almost a “paperless” office due to his desire to ensure it matches up with what is obtainable in the more developed countries.

A fully de-tribalised Nigerian (although he prefers the use of the word “untribalised), he is also the Sardauna of Uba in Borno State and the Okwuluora of Ukpo in Anambra State. The branches of his firm give a whole new meaning to the popular Nigerian slang, “Wa-Zo-Bia” as they are “melting pots,” comprising every major language spoken in the country.

A consummate politician and sportsman to the core, Chief Gadzama has always said he would start serious practice once he turns 50. Now, he is 50, we wait to the see the new dimension he intends to introduce to his practice.
